As you know, Green The Block is all about building community, fostering creative community engagement, and empowering people to stand up for sustainable solutions to challenges in their neighborhoods and cities. The outstanding work of one of our Green The Block-ers is a great example of a creative solution to a large community problem.

Whenever my family traveled from Richmond, CA, to our Navajo homeland, we would pass by San Francisco Peaks. My mother would tell us then to bless ourselves by breathing in four times – to breathe in the powers and strength of the Peaks into our physical and mental being. This mountain is one of the four sacred mountains in Navajo culture. We always honor these mountains. We are the mountains and they are us as Dineh.

As Green The Block kicks off our fall theme for clean air, let’s take a moment to honor the Tar Sands Action happening in DC and reflect on the importance of playing a role in creating a clean energy economy in this country.

In communities across the country, people are struggling. Families are struggling to make ends meet due to joblessness and low wages. In these same communities, children struggle to breathe because their neighborhoods are plagued with industrial pollution. Across the country people suffer the burden of pollution and poverty. That is why Green For All and the Hip Hop Caucus co-founded the Green The Block campaign, and why Green For All carries on this campaign today.

Green The Block is a national campaign aimed at helping low-income communities of color address the many environmental issues affecting our cities and towns and to become a driving force a new clean-energy economy. It is a long-term campaign grounded in regular people like you stepping up to educate and engage our communities so we can effectively join together with our neighbors, community organizations, and businesses to take action block by block!
